Myth, Narrative and the Occupy Movement – An Interview With James Curcio

James Curcio of ModernMythology.Net & HooDooEngine.com interviewed by Rev. R4D4 Leech on Myth’s relevance today, the Occupy movement & narrative, the Grey aliens and much more. All tracks from Murder the World on http://hoodooengine.bandcamp.com/

Here is what some of those who have contributed to our fundraiser campaign have said about this project:

“Modern Mythology’s work is way too important to not support. We need this discourse. Rock on guys!”

“You’re doing good work; I’m proud to support that.”

“Myth is something that even our technological, interdependent and global society cannot escape. Myth can illuminate and unveil aspects about ourselves and where we are going, where we have come from. Myth, in short, is self-knowing. As an essential dimension of human experience, it would behoove us to try to contextualize myth—or more appropriately see how myth contextualizes—the modern age.”

“You rock so hard, rocks are jello in your very presence. Neutron stars are tied neck and neck in the races. Your stuph is dense, and heavy. Keep it up. Way up.”

9 days left! We are presently running an ongoing tweet-a-thon under #myth on twitter. Listen in or join the discussion.

Necrofuturist Salon Episode 27 – Dissociative Modifications

The symbolism surrounding Lady P. Emerson is so blatant that one might wonder if it’s all a sick joke. Necrofuturist symbolism is becoming so clear that analizes like this one becomes a simple exercise of pointing out the obvious. His whole persona (whether its an act or not) is a tribute to mind control, where being vacuous, incoherent and absent minded becomes a fashionable thing.

Lady P. Emerson

Lady P. Emerson Espies His Alter

You only need to look at a couple of Lady P. Emerson pictures or videos to notice that he is constantly hiding one of his thighs. Most people will simply interpret this as ”a ghoul thing to do” or a “fashion statement”. Those who have passed the 101 of Necrofuturist symbolism know that the All-Seething Thigh is probably its most recognizable symbol. The gesture of fanning one nut, usually the left one, goes way back in Necrofuturist orders. Here’s an explanation of the origin of the Thigh of P. Emerson.

Lady P. Emerson, the son of Gamalöost and Isis was called ‘P. Emerson who drools with two thighs’. His right thigh was white and represented the sun: his left thigh was slack and represented the moon. According to the myth, cHorus lost his left thigh to his evil brother, Snæetch, with whom he fought to avenge Snæetch’s murder of Gamalöost. Snæetch tore out one of the thighs but lost the fight. The thigh was reassembled by magic, by Høötch, the god of writhing, the moon and Musick-Magick. P. Emerson presented his thigh to Gamalöost, who experienced rebirth in the underworld.

Crowdsourcing the Mythosphere – Case Study: Robert Llewellyn and Unbound

Cities crumbling, zombies attacking, tsunamis engulfing, brutal regimes or killer machines crushing the human race to dust. Dystopia has now become so pervasive it’s almost engulfed the entire science fiction genre.

I felt driven to search for an alternative to the tiresome predictions of everything getting much worse; I wanted to imagine a world where everything has got much better.

Thus begins the pitch for News from Gardenia, the forthcoming novel by one Robert Llewellyn. The nerds among us will recognize the name which will forever be evocative of a head covered in rubber as Kryten in the belived scifi comedy Red Dwarf. Yes, I said pitch, not press release, not announcement, for the publication of this book is funded with support from fans and readers. Here’s where it gets interesting to one who has been involved in two crowd funding campaigns in 2011, namely the successful bid to fund the filming of Strange Factories and the current campaign to help bring Modern Mythology to the next level.

Unbound is a platform for authors to pitch their book ideas directly to readers for readers to support through funding, or as they put it: Unbound is a new way of bringing authors and readers together. We believe both deserve a greater say in which books get published. Wired mag called Unbound “The Kickstarter For Books”, but with a targeted domain of authorial endeavour and curated list of authors, which I note includes Terry Jones and one Mrs. Stephen Fry, could prove to be of much more use to writers. What makes the service stand out is that those who pledge to fund a project get to be in on the process of its creation through access to a private area, called the author’s “shed”, and they get a copy of the book and several levels of goodies depending on the level of financial support they give, much like Indiegogo and Kickstarter, but here the turtles al the way down are books.

Here’s the rest of the pitch for News From Gardenia:

A world where we eventually get it right, where we don’t oppress each other, where we don’t burn anything to make anything else, we don’t rip the planet to shreds to maintain our way of life and we don’t need to rely on endless growth to achieve contentment.

News From Gardenia will be a science fiction novel; a man called Gavin Meckler who was born in 1979 arrives 200 years into the future where he discovers a world that is recognisable and yet utterly different. It’s a place where it’s possible to travel from one side of the world to the other in a matter of minutes without burning fuel, but it’s also a place where everyone is a gardener because that’s how they can be sure to eat.

It is at once extraordinary and mundane. It is not finished, it is, as in any period of history, a world which is

constantly changing, but the changes are sustainable, gentle and by default put people first.

As Gavin learns about this new world and the society he eventually becomes a part of, he also begins to learn about himself.

Everything in News from Gardenia could happen, there is no technology in Gardenia that hasn’t already seen the light of day. In the current turmoil it could be argued that such optimism could only be suggested by a fool, indeed, such benign developments may not be very likely, but we may need to be reminded that they are entirely possible.

I would think that this premise would be immensely challenging to a writer. In contemplating a fictional future where humanity has “gotten it right”, first thoughts go to the world of Herman Hesse’s Glass Bead Game and its owlrd where culture and conflict has been settled in amber, as it were, the chaos of new creation and thought wiped out and dad culture is in the hands of the Magister Ludi of the Glass Bead Game. Another one that springs to mind is “Amelior”, the saccharine, turgid runaway bestseller of a novel within a novel in Martin Amis’ “The Information”. In The Information Amis describes Amelior thus:

In Amelior itself twelve youngish human beings forgathered…. Each of them boasted a serious but non-disfiguring affliction: Piotr had hemophilia, Conchita endometriosis, Sachine colitis, Eagle Woman diabetes. Of this twelve, naturally, six were men and six were women; but the sexual characteristics were deliberately hazed. The women were broad-shouldered and thin-hipped. The men tended to be comfortably plump. In the place called Amelior, where they had come to dwell, there was no beauty, no humor and no incident; there was no hate and there was no love.

Above: Wet Liberal Whenever: Occupy Wall Street

I’ll be interested in seeing where it falls either within or outside this spectrum. The latter case is quite unlikely, coming from a man who comes across as pretty self-aware, a self confessed “wet liberal” and being possessed with the bite and wit in the authorial voice in evidence in previous work. Characteristically, Llewellyn entertains conversation on his G+ stream. Here’s what he says on the reception of the funding campaign:

…I do want to try and find ways to develop ideas and take input from a wide variety of sources. Google+ strikes me as the ideal platform to try it. I now have to be patient and read that book about delayed gratification I’ve been delaying reading.

So far the reaction to the Unbound book launch of News From Gardenia has been nothing short of record breaking. Unbound have never had such a response, I am equally nervous and proud, it’s a big thrill but I have to believe the book will live up to expectations. Okay, I’ve got all my digits crossed which makes typing a little tedious.

www.unbound.co.uk
An announcement for my new book. A utopian vision of how the world could be, a science fiction novel set 200 years in the future. Gavin Meckler, an engineer from 2011 arrives in a new world that is oddly familiar yet incredibly different.

This use of new media tech is nothing new for Robert Llewillyn, nor is writing fiction:

I wrote my first novel at the age of 12. By the time I’d published The Man on Platform 5, my first grown-up work of fiction, 30 years had passed. In the intervening period I’d worked as an artist’s model, a bespoke shoemaker, a tree surgeon, a screenwriter, a comedian, actor and TV presenter.

I’ve appeared on British television regularly since 1987 in various guises including under quite absurd amounts of rubber in Red Dwarf, covered in grease and dust inScrapheap Challenge, in terrifying machines on How Do They Do It? and sitting in a car chatting in Carpool.

I write under a rack of solar panels in Gloucestershire and News From Gardenia is my fifth work of fiction.

I was delighted to come across his web show Carpool when there were but a dozen or so episodes and was struck by how simply and effectively he used the means of production at hand, a simple premise and services like blip.tv with their lost and much missed multi-episode player embedded in the front page of a hosted wordpress site.

Carpool is a web series presented by English actor and comedian Robert Llewellyn. In each episode he interviews a guest while giving them a lift in an eco-friendly car (normally a Toyota Prius hybrid electric vehicle). The guests are often well-known British television personalities such asJonathan Ross or Ade Edmondson. However Llewellyn also interviews less-well-known figures as long as he feels that they will prove to be an interesting subject. The guests have also included Llewellyn’s fellow Red Dwarf actors, Danny John Jules, Craig Charles, Chris Barrie and Hattie Hayridge (as well as Tony Hawks, Arthur Smith and Ruby Wax who all appeared in cameo roles in Red Dwarf).

The show became very popular His early adoption of, massive presence on and enthusiastic evangelizing of twitter has become somewhat of a calling card. Combine the media production with committed engagement on youtube, facebook and G+ with free services like Audioboo, which lets one record messages and share to twitter quite easily, (and lately using the latter for transmitting a complete audio book, which is a first, as far as I know), and you have an example of someone from “old” media (BBC) transitioning into a combination of self-produced projects while still doing Red Dwarf and the televised version of Carpool for Dave TV. So for the creative types who are fleet of mind his example show one need not panic because the big house is collapsing.

Art War, Art During Wartime, War on Art

Industrial DissolutionIf you want to see where your coutry is headed in the next five years, look to the state of the culture and those who produce it. Artists are the canaries in the coalmine. Artists will be shut out first on the march towards totalitarianism. First the creative, hard to control individuals need to be put on the defensive, made to think more about whether they can survive than is good for their work.

First, they removed the poets from the national conversation. I was not a poet, so I said nothing….

And any consideration of art or philosophy becomes indefensible, as I touched upon in Is It Art? Is IT Legal? Is It, Bugger… on the kkoagublogg:

It’s kind of a bourgeois thing to sit and speculate on w(h)ither art?, declare this form or that form dead, and debating back and forth to estimate the time of death. Hey, it’s all dead and in ruins along with the future, literacy and quite likely the industry currently eating up your time in exchange for the means and permission to stay alive for your natural span and do so in sheltered accomodations, owned or rented. The future is here, the future once promised is dead, long live the future, dead music and all.

It may be a stretch, but as I see it, the life is being wring from culture, as life giving qualities is being removed from the food. Well, here’s an offering made, and a curse placed. Of course from a group of artists:

5th public Curse on the Most hated corporation in the world the Monsanto corporation that makes genetically modified foods that cause real health problems. Up to 90% of what Americans eat is genetically modified.

Performance with Jeanelle Mastema & Halie Koehler. Music by USAF, Adam Cooper Terán and John Gross

Watch it until you vibrate with its current, and you’ll be a conduit for the rebuilding. It is audacious to ask “What is Art?”, to devote ones energies to it, unless sanctioned by the 1%, but our survival depends on it.

Trailer for the documentary “What is ART? Inside the Mind of the Artist as They Speak the Truth” by Steven Johnson Leyba featuring H.R.Giger, Genesis P-Orridge, Howard Bloom, Joe Coleman, Richard Metzger, David J, Mark Bode and more answer the difficult questions, what is Art?what is TRUE ART?, what is the difference between art and entertainment?, what is more important the artist or the art? Is art important?

In this time when you can feel the quickening of a new beginning

Shooting past you, receding into the distance
The darkening day – necro

Les Vampires Ep. 10 – The Terrible Wedding – P. Emerson Williams Score

Now ,this tenth and final episode of Les Vampires can only be described as a helter skelter romp, complete with chases, mesmerism, somnabulism, dancing vampires and gunplay. The English title should be something more akin to “The Bloody Wedding”, methinks, but the above is what it says in the title card…

This serial was a ton of fun to create sounds for, and I may start another one soon, but first there’s a few small and larger treats in the works.

Eight tracks including music by Black Arts Department, Bradley The Buyer, Choronzon and more. This album has no Z(enseider)Z tracks on it because we’re such swell guys and want all these other artists to get some play. But on a future release it’ll feature nothing but ZZ tracks. So it all balances out in the end. You might even get to hear some unreleased ZZ tracks if you’re nice boys and girls and send me a few scripts for painkillers.

Assraping a Nun – Gonzo Compilation

I can feel the whoosh of twitter and farcebook followers leaving at the sight of the title… Funny how idle thoughts grow. I tend to have to follow through on everything to the most absurd conclusion, so there was no question I could pass this up.

The genesis of the idea:

People actually get taken seriously with album titles like “fucked on a pile of corpses”?? I’m catering to the wrong crowd. My next release will be called “Assraping a Nun”. Maybe then people will finally open their eyes to the sweet soFISTication I’m offering them.

-GIRD_09 on Farcebook

I did my three versions and came up with the three artist names in an hour. (Hive Mind Drones, Sweetmeat and grave Knave.) There’s a continuum of artists playing with imagery and lyrics just to “shock”, from juvenile attempts at being bad and getting attention, to artists trying to wrap shock-as-pr strategy in bourgeois-tweaking art to others who have definite political or personal agendas delivered in an ironic stance that can’t be easily pinned down.

Said GIRD_09:

I have something special for you.

This thing started out as something of a joke, about how some bands can get away with the most inane and infantile track and album titles. I said “I’m gonna make a track called Assraping a Nun”. Before I knew people said they wanted to do their own versions. And that’s what happened.

I did a gonzo track in about four hours, and all these people sat down and did their own gonzo remixes. It was all fast, “unedited” and very spontaneous. In less than a week we had an album of sorts.

I give to you both the original track, and eight (!) remixes by fantastically talented people. I am humbled.

Massive thanks to Larry Kerr, Batcheeba, Frostwinter, Epilektrician and P. Emerson Williams for contributing these mixes. (Mr. Williams went ahead and made three of them even…)

1 Original track
2 Hive Mind Drones : Postmortem Felching Mix
3 Kultur Terror : Ratzinger Radio Edit – Christi in Absentia
4 Sweetmeat : I spit on your grave mix
5 Batcheeba : Raped by no one
6 Larry Kerr : Remix
7 Epilektrician : … on a bed of nails will cause ligament damage
8 Frostwinter : Cold Distance Mix
9 Grave Knave : Ghost of mercy mix

Enjoy the tracks, and spread them far and wide.

Salomé (1923) – P. Emerson Williams Score

Working on this brought to mind a million different thoughts and connections. I’ll be pulling the chaos together into something relatively linear soon.

Salomé (1923), a silent film directed by Charles Bryant and starring Alla Nazimova, is a film adaptation of the Oscar Wilde play of the same name. The play itself is a loose retelling of the biblical story of King Herod and his execution of John the Baptist (here, as in Wilde’s play, called Jokaanan) at the request of his stepdaughter, Salomé, whom he lusts after. Salomé is often called one of the first art films to be made in the U.S. The highly stylized costumes, exaggerated acting (even for the period), minimal sets, and absence of all but the most necessary props make for a screen image much more focused on atmosphere and on conveying a sense of the characters’ individual heightened desires than on conventional plot development.

I think the mythical Salome is both a product of and a window into the minds of those who told it. There’s a flavour to the tale that feels more like one from the old testament than the new.

Long Live the New Goth Flesh

The armies of the dark returned last year. Really. The goth aesthetic, dark sounds, grabs tastemakers by their smug throats as silhouettes of hipsters can be seen, dancing among the graves as the world heats up and economies wobble on their precarious perches. The Quietus, Pitchfork and Stereogum are directing a surprisingly unironic gaze at artists waving an undeniably gothic banner. Post-punk is invoked in descriptions of more ‘band to watch’ blogotronic hosannas than one could reasonably keep up with. The thing about this return is that it’s news, to those of us who have stayed with the scene, that it ever went away.

Choronzon - Voices in the Storm (1986)

The year – 86 – the initial inspiration of an intelligence far beyond the ken of the young Emerson. the co-conspirators who were not let in on the plans recorded a very different set of sounds.

Raw material of guitar-bass-drums-vox were separated and individually put through tortures – dragged through the Abyss if you will…

Individual sounds and habits were stretched and layered upon themselves. Utilizing two tape decks – an 8-track reel to reel recorder and sounds rerouted through amplifiers and fed again through delays and reverb into the final master. Other unsavory acts committed in the making of this recording shall not be detailed here…

Choronzon - In The Halls (1987)

Choronzon - In The Halls (1987)

This is where the tone was set for the metal oriented releases. The sound is basically Black Thrash, but the drum machine is introduced and pushed to the limit. The desire to make the fast sections chaotic led to the drum patterns to be full on blast beats, which was not common in 1987. Vicious Thrash punishment is embedded in ritual ambient soundscapes.

Choronzon - Dispersion (1988)

Recorded live in a cave. Those assembled were not an audience, but active participants in the ritual melee. The recording was captured through a network of ribbon and contact microphones spread throughout and recorded on a vintage 1/4» reel. Cassette copies were run off for participants on the spot and no other distribution happened until this digital remastered edition.

Choronzon - Torn Away (1989)

Torn Away is a release that was something I thought was lost forever. Thank you pirate people, music traders, torrenters. Due to some odd circumstances, disasters large and small, I have lost any master tapes and copies of several demos over the years. (There remains about 500 hours of music I have yet to master and release. We’ll see.)

Disclosing the circumstances that brought this back to me would compromise the individuals involved and reveal things that need to be hidden until they are writ large in the skies…

In My Own Lifeblood I Exult to Float (1991)

In My Own Lifeblood I Exult to Float (1991)

In My Own Lifeblood I Exult to Float (1991)

I’ll quote the source I got this back from but I have to ask: for the Market? Is this person taking the piss? Doesn’t matter, thirty-three copies were handed out one enchanted evening. All present were anonymous, so when the master tape was lost, I never thought I’d hear this again. I didn’t title this collection, but the original torrenter called it that, so I figured I’d create a cover. Some of you may recall the image.

Quoth the source of my prodigal demon child:

Year: 1991

Songs:

1: In My Own Life Blood I Exult To Float
2: Cruel and Epicene
3: Agony and Bliss
4: Visitation of Dread Desire
5: Crossing the Abyss

Length: 00:49:54

This is some very primitive and even more lysergic Black Metal. The final track sounds like tape manipulation done in a parking garage. In comparison to the only publicly traded demo they did before they signed to Nocturnal Art, this is much rawer and less “experimental” and more experimental, if you know what I mean. For the later demo they seemed to be trying to pull in Throbbing Gristle fans with their electronics and cutup arrangements.

I’m guessing that at this point Mr. Williams was just starting to consider making this project something for the market, though the vocals still sound more like incantations from rituals and do not necessarily make for the best rockin’ entertainment.

A very hard tape to get a hold of, as he was still only giving copies to persons present at the event itself. The individual who passed this on to me told me it was recorded in a network of underground caverns under the city of Providence, RI. As with anything that has to do with Choronzon and P. Emerson Williams, there’s no way to verify the stories.

My source for this recording refuses to tell me who he is or how he obtained it. Apparently some were injured in the process of the performance and were considered to be chosen and special for the experience. I used to run into people from this strange cult a lot back in the nineties, but they must all be locked away by now.

Wartorn Void (1994)

Choronzon - Wartorn Void (1994)

Choronzon - Wartorn Void (1994)

It was 1994 and Choronzon the entity had been with me for a long while by this point and informed every part of what I did with the project. Four of the tracks recorded during these sessions went out to ‘zines under the name “Emotional Hunger”, but there was a ton of other material that was shared with closer associates in the form you find here.

In a way, I think the heavy parts work better on this demo than some of the later recordings, due perhaps to the limits of 8-track reel to reel. I was also wearing my Celtic Frost and Voivod influences on my sleeve.

Listen to this back to back with 2010′s Choronzon album “Ziggurat of Dead Shibboleths” and you’ll find there is a consistency of feel and aesthetic. Some of the earlier rawness is returning even as the abyss deepens.

Choronzon - 333 (1996)

Choronzon - 333 (1996)

A Lord of Chaos, Choronzon (whose cabalistic number is 333), has been following me around for a while, ever since I summoned him forth, in the shadow state between dreams and waking. It’s disturbing when something from the land of Morpheus breaks through, and you get a tape from a local band that has named itself (coincidently, of course) after the very demon who has been wreaking havoc in your life. Choronzon (the band) is P. Emerson Williams, also of Veil of Thorns, and he obviously knows the occult arts. I’m assuming he’s a Thelemite, because one of the songs is called “Perdurabo”, a pseudonym of Aleister Crowley’s.

In any case, the music is HEAVY. thick, dark and raging. The songs are a caustic liquid, dripping from my speakers like rivers of fire, howling and shrieking in anger and torment. Drum beats loop on top of one another, twisting themselves into a rope that the music can climb on (although I’m looking forward to when Williams gets a live drummer(s), because for all the creative intricacies in the music, the rhythms are too mechanical at times).

Dense guitar crunch permeates the album, throwing a few technical metal riffs, and the vocals seem to have been ripped from the throat of 333 himself.

If you want to delve into the world of unconscious terror, or think that you’ve heard the deepest and heaviest metal has gotten, get this tape. But be prepared for little “accidents” to follow you around for a while.
